A Little Spring Cleaning ...

For a few days now I have been organizing my stash. Mom bought some more plastic bins and decided it was time she did the same thing. She was going to also clear out the cedar chest here in the front room and let me have that extra room too which was very kind. I really do need it. Realizing I have more shit piled up everywhere than anyone else in this house is something that needs to be dealt with and having more room will allow me the ability to start taking care of that. The other day I focused on my fingering weight yarns. Yesterday, I dealt with all my lace weight yarn...

A very similar looking pile to the last one. But lace weight is smaller and therefore more of it can occupy the same amount of space than the fingering weight yarn. When I started I had all my lace weight yarns stuffed into 2 plastic bins. And when I say stuffed, I mean stuffed. The lids of those bins where rounding on the top they were so stuffed. This needed to be fixed. So I took everything out of the 2 bins and dumped them into a pile on my bed. I separated according to color and variegation this time. One bin now has all the light colored lace in it, the whites, off whites, pale colors and odds and ends. The second one contains all the darker colored solid and tonal lace, and the the last one contains all the darker variegated yarns. After sorting everything out, this is the final result. Seven bins of yarn all sorted and organized so I can actually find things...

The last bin you see on the left hand side on top of everything holds a bunch of acrylic stuff that I keep around to make baby items. There's a feeling that comes with having everything neat and organized so things are easy to find. It's like spring cleaning for knitters and crocheters. In addition to the yarn bins you see above, I have baskets carrying my UFO's and all the patterns associated with them and all the yarn associated with working projects. Those were just sitting around my area on the sofa and, although she never really said anything, I knew it drove my Mom crazy. Not just because it was all just sitting there but because she knew I needed more room. In order to create more room it meant she had to do a little spring cleaning herself. Thus, the purchase of all the plastic bins. Mom cleared out all her stuff from the cedar chest here in the front room and put everything into plastic bins and then labeled her bins and moved them into the garage. Maybe someday I will photograph Mom's stash so everyone can a) be jealous and b) understand that Mom isn't kidding when she says she can open up a yarn store herself based on her stash alone. That could be fun! If you're interested in seeing Mom's stash, let me know in the comments and I start photographing! I started putting my things into the cedar chest and Audrey wanted to help...

She loved that I finally emptied the box that came from Cascade with a bunch of yarn. I think she was trying to tell me that it was about time I did that...

And truthfully, it was. it had all been sitting in the box since it arrived. I didn't have any real good place to put it. Now I do! It went into the cedar chest! All organized, here's what the cedar chest looks like now...

In the center is the basket that holds many, many UFO's and the patterns for them are stacked neatly behind everything in the back of the basket. The burgundy basket to the right holds the extra skeins of yarn for projects that I'm working on now and those UFO's. To the left is all the Cascade yarn I received along with a bag of half skeins of fingering weight yarn leftover from shawls. I need that all readily available so that I can begin to make my little crescents I need for my first class that I will be teaching. Yes, I will be teaching my first class sometime soon! I am looking forward to it but there is quite a bit of planning that will need to go into it and making little crescents are a part of that.

Speaking of finishing up projects, I have a shawl that is ready for its border, I just need to work out some particulars with this pattern. This was the first time working cables and I have enjoyed the learning process. Because its such a simple cable, I think when I write the pattern up I will write that portion rather than charting it out and leave the only chart to be the border. I think. I don't know, I'm undecided on it. I finally have named this shawl too....Sandia Skies. The colors are just right for it. The colors of the yarn and how it has layered is just like a beautiful New Mexico sunset. The layers are all just right. The knitted on border is to mimic the Sandia mountains so I'm really looking forward to starting it and getting it going. Here's what it looks like now and the picture that inspired the name...

I finally got the wee sweater going too and that is going very fast. It's just a tiny little thing. I started it the day before yesterday and here's what it looks like now...

Pattern is Small Things Sweater by Carina Spencer knit with Knit Picks Shine Worsted on US size 8 circulars

The sleeves have already been divided out from the rest of the body. I cannot begin to tell you how much I really love working with this yarn. I'm using Knit Picks Shine Worsted which is a blend of pima cotton and modal. It has a wonderful hand and great stitch definition. The reviews that I read on their site are all good and state that it wears very well too, doesn't pill and can easily go from washer to dryer.

Well, I hope you have all been enjoying your weekend and are getting lots of knitting done! Maybe this will inspire you to spring clean your stash too :-) Either way, as long as you are knitting and are happy you've accomplished the only goals that really matter. I'll see you back here soon, until then...Knit On!

  1. So how many stores did you have to go to to get enough plastic bins? Looks like Audrey prefers cardboard!

    1. She got a few here and a few there. I think this last batch she picked up at Albertsons as a matter of fact!
